Triptolide, which is also called tripterygium wilfordii lactone alcohol or tripterygium wilfordii lactone, is extracted from tripterygium wilfordii celastraceae plants. It contains three epoxy groups of diterpene lactone compounds, and it has anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive activities. Triptolide exerts proapoptotic and anti-proliferative effects on tumor cell lines in vitro, and reduces tumor size or restricts tumor growth in vivo. Furthermore, It sensitizes tumor cells to other therapeutic methods, such as chemoradiation. The synergistic effects of TPL with other chemotherapeutic agents showed efficacy in preclinical animal models.
