What are peptides

The word “peptide” itself comes from πέσσειν, the Greek word meaning “to digest.” Peptides are an essential part of nature and biochemistry, and thousands of peptides occur naturally in the human body and in animals. In addition, new peptides are being discovered and synthesized regularly in the laboratory as well. Indeed, this discovery and innovation in the study of peptides holds great promise for the future in the fields of health and pharmaceutical development.

Peptides are naturally occurring biological molecules. Peptides are found in all living organisms and play a key role in all manner of biological activity. Like proteins, peptides are formed (synthesized) naturally from transcription of a sequence of the genetic code, DNA. Transcription is the biological process of copying a specific DNA gene sequence into a messenger molecule, mRNA, which then carries the code for a given peptide or protein. Reading from the mRNA, a chain of amino acids is joined together by peptide bonds to form a single molecule.

How Are Peptides Formed?

Peptides are formed both naturally within the body and synthetically in the laboratory. The body manufactures some peptides organically, such as ribosomal and non-ribosomal peptides. In the laboratory, modern peptide synthesis processes can create a virtually boundless number of peptides using peptide synthesis techniques like liquid phase peptide synthesis or solid phase peptide synthesis. While liquid phase peptide synthesis has some advantages, solid phase peptide synthesis is the standard peptide synthesis process used today. Read more about peptide synthesis.

What are Peptides for Skin Care?

Human skin is comprised mostly of collagen. Collagen is a protein comprised of long segments of amino acids arranged like a chain.

  • Collagen provides a foundation and thickness for skin
  • Women under 30 have ample collagen, which results in smooth, tight skin
  • The rest of us have less collagen –  skin tends to be thinner, revealing more wrinkles

When collagen breaks down, short segments of amino acids are formed. These are the tiny proteins and active molecules known as peptides. Peptides in skin care can provide significant anti-aging benefits.
